El aerogel de grafeno, un material más ligero que helio y capaz de 'posarse' sobre una flor de cerezo sin dañarla, ha sido creado por científicos chinos.
El material, elaborado por investigadores de la Universidad de Zhejiang, en China, se parece a una esponja y pesa solo 0,16 milígramos por centímetro cúbico, superando en ligereza a otro material parecido, el aerografito, presentado hace unos meses.
Técnicamente se trata de una espuma compuesta de nanotubos de carbono congelados en seco y láminas de óxido de grafeno, a la que se la quitado el oxígeno mediante un proceso químico.
El aerogel de grafeno es extramedamente elástico y presenta una gran capacidad de absorción de aceites: puede absorber hasta 900 veces su propio peso, mientras otros productos absorbentes de aceite absorben alrededor de 10 veces su propio peso.
Gracias a sus cualidades y facilidad de producción, podría jugar un papel importante en la protección y purificación del medio ambiente, sostiene Gao Chao, que encabeza el grupo de los investigadores que ha creado el material.
"En caso de derrame de petróleo se podría depositar el material en el mar para que absorba el petróleo rápidamente. Gracias a la elasticidad del material, tanto él como el petróleo podrían ser reutilizado”, destaca Chao.
